T. Boone Pickens' Mesa Power LLP placed a $2 billion order for 667 wind turbines with General Electric to build the world's largest wind farm in the Texas Panhandle, the Dallas Morning News reported today.
Mesa Power plans to announce the deal later Thursday, according to the newspaper. They are reporting that the wind farm would produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 300,000 homes.
I grew up in the Texas Panhandle (Amarillo) and I can assure you that there is enough wind in that part of the United States to power about anything T. Boone wants to power.
There are already a few turbines between Amarillo and Vega and there is plenty of open land to place these turbines. It will be interesting to watch as these start to go be built in and around the Panhandle of Texas.
When I was growing up in Amarillo, it seemed like a calm day was a thirty mile an hour wind. While I know that is not completely true, as a kid it sure seemed like the wind never stopped blowing.
The great thing about this growing up, was the lack of air pollution. We always joked that all our pollution just blew on down to Dallas. Now it seems that the second great thing about the wind in the Texas Panhandle will be the jobs and money to be made from a new emerging industry.
If it can be done, I feel sure T. Boone Pickens can make it happen.
